How it works
Cleaning your deck is important for giving the longest life possible to your wood. However, clean it the wrong way and it can do the reverse effect!
You see, when you simply blast away with high pressure, your deck may look clean but you are actually taking off a thin layer of wood making it thinner and thinner every time you pressure wash it. This has a large effect on the life span of the wood. Other damages may include, splitting the wood and laplines.
We prefer using a softwash method which essentially means we use chemicals to do most of the work for us!
When you are cleaning your deck, it’s important to know what exactly you are trying to achieve with it afterwards.
If you have a previous stain on the wood and just want to add another coat of the same stain, a basic low pressure cleaning will do the trick just fine.
However if you are trying to restore the wood and use a different stain, you will need to strip the old stain off by using a stripper and brighten it with an acidic product to balance the PH levels of the wood.
Here is the difference between cleaning and stripping
Cleaning
- Wet the wood and rince down all surrounding plants
- Protect electrical outlets
- Apply algaecide and let it work for a bit to kill mold and mildew
- Rinse with low pressure
- Rinse surrounding plants so product does not adhere to the plants
Stripping
- Wet the wood and rince down all surrounding plants
- Protect electrical outlets
- Apply stripper with a paint brush and let it work for a bit to remove old stain and kill mold
- Rinse with low to medium pressure depending on the old stain
- Rinse surrounding plants so product does not adhere to the plants
- Apply brightener and let it work
- Rinse with low pressure
- Rinse surrounding plants
